We are excited to invite Yulia Hanansen, an internationally acclaimed mosaic artist to teach at MSoP. She is a second-generation mosaic artist and has been professionally involved in mosaic making since 2001. The mission of her Mosaic Sphere Studio is to build public awareness about the quality of mosaics, and to exhibit the superb qualities of mosaic techniques.

"Flower Exploration in Mosaic Art: Contemporary Renderings"
When: 2 days, October 22-23, 2016.
Description: This workshop offers an opportunity to learn about contemporary renderings of flowers in a mosaic technique. The workshop will start with a presentation that discusses in detail ancient and modern representations of flowers and floral elements. A demo will be given on techniques, stylizations, and layouts. As a hands-on part students will create their own mosaic interpretation of a flower based on a photograph or a sketch using a traditional layout or Yulia’s signature brush-stroke technique. During the workshop students will also explore a color palette, flower details, composition, layout, and technical aspects of working with the stained glass modules. Images will be provided or bring your own upon approval of the instructor. All skill levels are welcome. Non-members are welcome to sign up!
PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE FROM YULIA 10/7/2016:
Students will need to bring their own glass. Due to the crisis in the glass industry I am not able to supply any glass for the workshop. Please let the student know that they will have to bring their own glass. I hope they’ll understand. The workshop fee will be reduced to $20 as I’ll bring the rest of the supplies and handouts.

Dalle de Verre: Into the Thick (and Thin) of It
Claire Brill
All Levels | $242
Class Time: Friday–Sunday
One person’s trash can be the same person’s treasure. While learning to facet the richly colored, inch thick Dalle de Verre (French for slab of glass), Claire discovered that the residual chips are themselves visually compelling raw mosaic materials. This workshop will cover use of the faceting hammer, exploration of the effect of different substrates under chips (reflective materials, clear glass) and experimentation with chip placement to bend colors, create high dimension, and invent new andamento (lines or flow of pieces). Harkening back to glass’s liquid origins, you will draw design inspiration from the forest stream at Touchstone and make a mosaic of your own.
In and around her hometown—Media, Pennsylvania—Claire Brill first pursued mosaics for their community art potential. After more than twenty large-scale collective installations, nine years, and two babies, Claire now increasingly focuses on her own voice as an artist. Accolades include works hanging in the University of Pennsylvania Museum and selected for the Mosaic Arts International Exhibition, and an invitation to teach in Puerto Rico. Claire’s work is boldly expressive, marrying her love of nature with the sparkly, reflective, deeply colorful, transparent nature of Dalle de Verre. Learn more about her work atwww.mosaicspaces.com.

Benchmark Hosts Mosaic Workshop with Prestigious Artist
Last weekend, Benchmark hosted members of the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia for a workshop presented by internationally-known mosaic artist Kelley Knickerbocker. Benchmark art teacher Carol Rydel is an active member of the Mosaic Society and was instrumental in bringing the workshop to Benchmark.
Saturday and Sunday's workshop was called "Strata Various," and attendees made a sample board using various mosaic materials such as stone, marble, granite, glass and beads to form "strata" (layers) on the backer board. They also learned how to cut the "tesserae" (various materials) and attach them to the backer board in interesting ways. Monday's workshop was called "Grey Scale" and the attendees were limited to using only white to black materials to compose a mosaic.
Carol Rydel noted that the group was impressed with Benchmark's facilities, commenting that they loved the building and the natural light in the Clemens Lobby of the A. Palmer West Performing Arts Center and would be happy to return here for another workshop.
