Sharon Ritz Delaware County Symphony's Featured Artist !
Each year, the Delaware County Symphony features the work of a local artist on the cover of our annual brochure. For the 2015-2016 concert season, we have selected Dualing Violins by Sharon Ritz. This art was created in 2007 for the New Haven Symphony Orchestra's "The Art Violin Project". It was auctioned to benefit the Symphony. The mosaic represents the dual personality of a violin - both classic and playful. It includes actual components from an instrument: a bridge, pegs, and tailpiece. .
Sharon Ritz has played the string bass in community orchestra for 35 years. She fell in love with glass mosaic art as another way to express herself. She lives in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Her works have been shown in many regional venues including the Old City Jewish Art Center (Philadelphia), Markeim Art Center (Haddonfield), and the Art Gallery in the Philadelphia City Hall. She is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, and a board member of the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia. You can learn more about Sharon Ritz and her work by visiting www.SharpartsMosaics.com.

OBJECTIVE: to learn to see unique tessera potential in most any material, and then maximize
that potential by shape, angle, spacing, and proximity to other materials.
HOW YOU’LL GET THERE:
1. Processing materials (stone, glass, and more) with a variety of tools
2. Creating striated mosaic sample boards as visual reminders of techniques.
ALSO COVERED:
1. Building and rigging your own durable, lightweight substrate
2. Properties of thinset mortar (tip, embed, nestle, and build up those tesserae!
3. Effective use of empty space (vive la vacancy!)
4. Much more!
(The one-day Between Black and White: Working in Grayscale workshop on 4/17 is the follow-
on to this workshop; a great opportunity to build a mosaic start to finish using everything learned
in Strata Various PLUS learn a host of new information about working effectively in grayscale.
$60 discount off the total cost for MSoP members who register for both workshops.)
Course Description: Grayscale
Kelley mines her several years of experience in creating mosaic artworks almost exclusively
without color to bring students a wealth of practical tips for effective us of value (light to dare),
gradient, and contrast. Students practice what they’re learning in real time by creating a small,
ungrouted, abstract mosaic from diverse grayscale (black, white, gray, clear) materials using a
contrasting or neutral thinset as adhesive.
(Strata Various: Mix and Master Materials in Mosaic workshop, 4/15-4/16, is designed to be a
prequel (though not required!) to this workshop: build strong, light mosaic substrates, learn to
use a variety of tools for processing; effectively use varied (stone, ceramic, glass, found objects,
etc.) and multi-height materials together. $60 discount off the total cost for students who take
both)
