Join MSoP via Zoom for a very special presentation by renown mosaic artist, Helen Miles, speaking to us from England. Trained in Greece, Helen Miles has more than 20 years’ experience designing, making and teaching mosaics. As a mosaic artist Helen believes in the importance of understanding the fundamental principles of the ancient art and the joy and the creativity that can be found in pushing the medium in new directions. Helen’s first book about mosaics, Mosaics: Ancient Techniques to Contemporary Art, will be published by White Owl press in March 2023. She teaches mosaic classes from her studio in Edinburgh, Scotland as well as residential courses in Greece.
Her presentation will focus on the ancient principles of mosaic making as they have been used since Roman times. These ‘rules’ underpin the making of representational mosaics but are also relevant in the design and creation of contemporary abstract pieces. The talk will include a focus on the concepts of sdoppiamento and andamento and will look at the ancient opuses or ways of laying the background of a mosaic. Come join us for promises to be an interesting and entertaining afternoon!
