Guest speaker Muhsana Ali, an artist who was born in Philadelphia and who has lived in Senegal for the past 18 years. She has recently along with her husband, Senegalese artist, Amadou Kane Sy, served as artist in residence at the University of Pennsylvania while producing a sculptural installation for the Penn Museum to accompany the newly redesigned Africa Galleries collection. The couple produced their work at the private studio of Isaiah Zagar, who taught them his mosaic technique in 2004. Largely making use of these techniques, Muhsana and Amadou have been involved in art for social change for over 25 years. They operate a Center for Art and Holistic Development in rural Senegal where they have raised their three children, now ages 16, 15 and 11. Muhsana will share with us her artistic journey in Senegal and her work with communities in various locations in the US and in Africa.
